At the beginning of each year all of our employees are given the opportunity to enter a draw and whoever’s name is pulled from the hat gets to organise fundraising events throughout the year for their chosen charity. We donate a sum of money to provide a ‘fighting fund’ to organise events so that as much money as possible goes straight to the chosen charity.
Charity Fundraising
At the beginning of each year all of our employees are given the opportunity to enter a draw and whoever’s name is pulled from the hat gets to organise fundraising events throughout the year for their chosen charity. We donate a sum of money to provide a ‘fighting fund’ to organise events so that as much money as possible goes straight to the chosen charity.
This year, Paula Hamilton, our Sales Order Processing Coordinator has chosen two charities dear to her heart – Target Ovarian Cancer and Diabetes UK. Here’s why these two charities mean so much to Paula…
“My mum was diagnosed with a very rare cancer, Primary Peritoneal Cancer (PPC) in February 2017. PPC is treated in the same way as Ovarian cancer, both of which are devastating diseases. Awareness of ovarian cancer is low, both among women and GPs, with two thirds of women diagnosed once the cancer has already spread. My mums was found purely by chance, is extensive and sadly incurable.
-
Approximately 7,300 women are diagnosed each year in the UK
-
4,100 women lose their lives each year – that’s 11 women every day
-
Over a quarter of women with Ovarian cancer are diagnosed through an emergency presentation such as accident and emergency
-
The two greatest risks, are age and family history, with over 1,000 women each year developing Ovarian cancer because they have inherited the faulty gene (from either their mother’s or father’s side)
Ovarian cancer faces chronic underfunding compared with other cancers. Enough is enough and it’s time to TAKE OVAR, and that’s the reason I want to raise money and awareness for Target Ovarian Cancer to make sure women in the UK have the best chances of surviving this horrible disease.
“Several close members of my family have been seriously affected by diabetes. The chances are you know someone living with Diabetes too, whether it’s Type 1 or Type 2. Coping with diabetes is difficult. It’s a condition with no known cure, and affects life every single day, making life complicated, tough, confusing and exhausting.
-
Every two minutes someone learns they have diabetes
-
Each day 65 people with diabetes die early
-
Every week thousands more suffer heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, kidney disease, blindness and amputations.
If people know how to manage their diabetes then these complications can be avoided and people can live well. That’s exactly what Diabetes UK helps people to do and the reason why I want to raise money – so that the charity can achieve their vision of a world where diabetes can do no harm.
I am very excited to have the opportunity to raise awareness, fund research and save lives in this way – I also feel quite a weight of responsibility! I have already floated a few ideas amongst the team and I hope to announce how you can join in and support us very soon. Watch this space!!”
