Aquarian Cladding have been awarded an order to supply specialist cladding contractor Metclad Contracts Ltd with approx. 2400m2 of Gebrik in its new FE01-50 Red Multi to be used on the latest Unite student accommodation building in Bristol.
The 442-bed development is on the former Bristol Entertainment Centre at Trenchard Street and features the removal of the existing ice rink to be replaced with 9 stories of brick cladding to blend in with the adjoining brick-clad student accommodation building (also owned by Unite). The new building also features a courtyard and will be sitting over the existing 02 Academy, which remains open for business below the structural podium. Consequently, main contractor RG Group and their architect Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson, faced a challenge to satisfy planning requirements for a brick façade, whilst keeping the loadings to the existing podium to a minimum. They also needed to ensure completion of the project in time for the start of the new student intake and minimise the inconvenience to the visitors to the O2.
After careful evaluation, Gebrik was selected for use with an additional 60mm layer of phenolic insulation onto sheathing board, applied to 100mm light gauge steel framing, filled with mineral wall - achieving a U value of 0.21W/m2K. The project is scheduled for completion in 2015 in time for the new academic year In September.
